Flying Saucers
Published in the Bakersfield Californian newspaper in the late 50's

This was a very popular cookie sold in the snack bar at Arvin High School as well as other high schools in the area. They cost 25 cents for a 6" cookie and were a real treat!

1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. honey
2 Tbs. milk
1/4 c. raisins
1-1/2 c. old-fashioned oatmeal
1-3/4 c. flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add egg, honey, milk and continue creaming.

Wash and soak raisins in hot water; drain well.
Combine with oatmeal and add to mixture.
Sift together dry ingredients and add to mixture.
Drop by 1/4 cup full onto well greased cookie sheet.
With a glass dipped in water, flatten cookies slightly.
Bake at 300° for 10-15 minutes.
Cookies will be a very delicate brown when done will look like a saucer.
Cool just enough to set cookies. Loosen with a spatula.
